| Biography: |
| Kyle Petty comes from a long line of racers, from pioneering grandfather Lee to dad, King Richard.
Yet Kyle had a choice growing up. He was offered college scholarships for both basketball and baseball, and even a Nashville recording agent thought he had the talent to be a country music star.
But racing was his first love, and in 1979 he began his career when he ran and won the ARCA Daytona 200. He also made his Cup debut that year and finished ninth in his first race, in August at Talladega.
Petty began racing Cup full time in 1981 and finished 12th in points with one top-five and 10 top-10s. But he found more success after he left Petty Enterprises and joined the Wood Brothers.
In 1985 Petty finished ninth in points with seven top-fives and 12 top-10s and followed that in February '86 with his first victory, at Richmond. After finishing 10th in points that year, Petty ranked seventh following the '87 season after posting one victory, six top-fives and 14 top-10s.
Petty's best two seasons came in 1992 and '93 for owner Felix Sabates when he finished fifth in the final point standings both years. In '92 he recorded his only multiple-win season of his career with two, and had nine top-fives and 17 top-10s. In '93 he had one win, nine top-fives and 15 top-10s.
The first race of 2006 will be the 750th of Petty's Cup career. His longevity places him near the top of several categories: his eight victories rank him 48th all-time and 26th in the Modern Era (1972-present), and he ranks 16th on the all-time money list.
