After the first two races in The Chase, two big
stories are emerging. One of them is Greg Biffle. He made it two for two in
Chase races, taking the win at the Dover 400 Sunday afternoon. He led 29 of the
race's 400 laps. Biffle is tied for second in the points with
Jimmie Johnson, ten points behind leader
Carl Edwards.
There were ten cautions in the race for 45 laps. Only one of the cautions
involved championship contenders.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. brought out the day's fourth yellow flag on lap 144.
He lost control of his car going out of turn four because of a blown tire. He
finished 24th Sunday. It dealt his title hopes a major blow, falling five spots
to 9th, 129 points behind Edwards.
Besides Biffle, the other major story was Kyle Busch. He's been the story all
season, but now he is for the wrong reasons. After finishing 34th at New
Hampshire, engine failure ended his day at Dover after completing 172 laps. He
finished last in the 43 car field. In the standings, Busch fell four spots back
to 12th in the points. He is now 210 points behind Carl Edwards. His once
bright championship hopes are now very dim.
Sunday was a great day for Roush-Fenway Racing. After race winner Greg Biffle,
Matt Kenseth (who's 136
laps led was the most of any driver) finished second with points leader Carl
Edwards third. Former Roush driver
Mark Martin placed fourth.
Chase drivers finished fifth through ninth, led by Jimmie Johnson.
Kevin Harvick finished
sixth, which helped him move five spots in the points to fifth (101 behind
Edwards). Jeff Gordon
finished seventh, Clint Bowyer
eighth with Jeff Burton ninth.
Michael Waltrip finished
tenth. Other Chase driver finishes were
Tony Stewart in 11th and
Denny Hamlin in 38th.
The Chase standings with eight races remaining: Leader remains Carl Edwards.
Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson are second (-10),
Jeff Burton 4th, (-82),
Kevin Harvick 5th (-101), Clint
Bowyer 6th (-106), Tony
Stewart 7th (-113), Jeff Gordon 8th (-118), Dale Earnhardt Jr. 9th
(-129), Matt Kenseth 10th (-167), Denny Hamlin 11th (-193), Kyle Busch 12th
(-210).
NASCAR will spend the
coming weekend at the Kansas
Speedway. The Nationwide
Series will race Saturday in the Kansas Lottery 300 with the
